You Are An Influencer Because You’re A Christian

A Christian Is An Influencer!

You were meant to influence your surroundings. And this starts from where you live.

Influencing your surroundings is a mandate God has given to all humankind from the very beginning. The creation, a Biblical narrative of how the universe came to be, testifies to that. Read Genesis 2 and focus on verse 15.

God took Adam and put him in the garden to cultivate it and take care of it!

Your life is the garden in which God has put you. To work and take care of your life inside of you and around you, that’s influence.

Influence is a spiritual matter.

What this means is that influence begins with your state of mind, which should result from spiritual transformation.

Long time ago, God promised to the people of Israel to give them a new heart and a new spirit. (Ezekiel 36:26-27).

What that was all about is threefold:

  • Regeneration.
  • New creation.
  • Sanctification.

Influence implies a regeneration of self, which transforms you into who God intended you to be. This new you (new creation) empowers you to live in a way that’s pleasing to God (sanctification).

Influence is your inner and personal power.

Influence comes from your inner and personal power. This results from regeneration and creation of your self. This happens only through the Holy Spirit Who works in you.

Three things then happen:

  • The Holy Spirit gives you the ability to be someone you’ve never been before.
  • The Holy Spirit shapes your character and behavior.
  • The Holy Spirit changes your perception of life.

This ability to be someone you’ve never been before isn’t only a result of what you can do. It’s made possible through the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is the only One who can help you connect to God in order to discover who you should truly be.

It’s also the Holy Spirit that gives you the ability to experience the fruit of the Spirit:

love, joy, peace, forbearance (forgiveness), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5: 22. ESV).

You then have the tools, skills and abilities to respond to whatever happens in your life in a healthy way.

Also, the Holy Spirit gives you gifts to accomplish what you were made for, here on earth. In other words, you find purpose, as a result.

Influence makes your life contagious.

With the ability to handle life in a godly way, your lifestyle will become contagious.

People would want to learn from you. And that’s how you can influence your surroundings. That’s how you can cultivate and take care of your life.

Doing so makes your life catchy and draws people’s attention. People will notice you because of your values and way of life.

Consequently, your life becomes a tool for other people’s formation and transformation. That’s disciple-making, which happens organically. And, your life will become an instrument inviting leading people into new places in life where they have never been before.

Influence is both local and global.

What’s key to influencing, as Christians, is to be where the people are.

Jesus was where the people were. If He had spent His entire time at the synagogue or temple, He would have never met someone like Peter (Matthew 4:18-22) or Mary of Magdalene (Luke 8:2). Also, He would have never healed the lepers (Luke 17:11-19) or raised from the dead people like Lazarus (John 11) or the daughter of Jairus (Matthew 9:18-26).

Influence becomes possible only when you are at public squares.

So, the question is how would you influence if you’re not at a public square? Of course, you would wonder what’s a public square in our age. Public squares have taken different shapes, especially with the current and rapidly changing technology.

You cannot at all public squares at once. But, you can choose one or two public spaces where you need to be in order to establish relationships with people.

Depending on where you’re in life, you should be able to identify ways that will help you best be where the people are.

Take a look at the following and decide what you need to do for yourself.

  • In person visits.
  • Phone calls.
  • Text messages.
  • Emails.
  • Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.

You are an influencer because God works in you through the power of the Holy Spirit!

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8. ESV.
